Memorial Day through July 4th

Originally Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day, honoring the Union and the Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War. By the 1900’s, it became a day to celebrate all American fallen soldiers in the military. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Act, designating Memorial Day as the last Monday in May. This ensured a three-day weekend and became the unofficial beginning of summer, mixing serious reflection with more lighthearted food and fun.

I embrace the patriotic period between Memorial Day and July 4^th   honoring our American freedom with decorations in red, white, and blue.

 

A white fretwork vase paired with a vibrant red candle holder brings a modern flair. In blue contrast is the 14^th century inspired Porcelain Cantonese vase. The grouping of white blossoms, hydrangeas with pops of red blooms display the rule of three in a floral arrangement. I enjoy reflecting this bedroom design. Not only is it patriotic, but it just feels like summertime!

In this dining room we incorporated blue hues– from navy to cerulean. By choosing blue as the dominant color, it welcomed pops of red without turning into a statement on patriotism.

We cannot discuss a summer holiday home without adding a favorite dessert. Patriotic Poke Cake is the perfect addition to your holiday hosting.  It is a yellow or white cake baked, then holes are poked in the cake and fruit preserves or Jell-O is poured over the cake, which seeps deep into the cake. This moist cake is frosted with fresh whipped cream mixed with a hint of vanilla bean to create a light and refreshing desert. Add decorations of fresh fruit and serve!
